Let’s Talk Bootable Kits

Bootable kits is a term used by technicians that reference a bunch of tools on a bootable DVD/CD that can be used to in repairing data and operating systems. There are many bootable kits and only a few that are customizable and free. These are just a few of them that we would call necessary to have in a tech bag.

NOTE: This list only contains bootable DVD/CD that you can customize onto a flash disk or backup hard drive and allows you to add additional tools to enhance the abilities.

Bart's PE Builder helps you build a "BartPE" (Bart Preinstalled Environment) bootable Windows CD-Rom or DVD from the original Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 installation/setup CD, very suitable for PC maintenance tasks.

It will give you a complete Win32 environment with network support, a graphical user interface (800x600) and FAT/NTFS/CDFS filesystem support. Very handy for burn-in testing systems with no OS, rescuing files to a network share, virus scan and so on.

KNOPPIX

Download

Image Provided By Knopper.net
Knopper is a German made bootable Linux tool kit that comes with a 64bit kernel in addition to the usual one with 32 bits. Knopper is also classified as a full media bootable operating system because the majority of the technical community is using this as their main operating system opposed to using Microsoft or Mac operating systems. This makes this bootable kit faster than other kits. If you like to use the new kernel you must enter knoppix64 instead of knoppix at the boot prompt. Some kernel modules are not available if you use the 64 bits kernel.

The support information is in German but it is also has an English version that you can enter by just adding English on the boot prompt. I personally have to use a translator program when using and configuring this kit, but it is a great way of making everything secure.

Ultimate Boot CD for Windows (UBCD4Win)

Download

UBCD4Win is a bootable recovery CD that contains software used for repairing, restoring, or diagnosing almost any computer problem. Almost all software included in UBCD4Win are freeware utilities for Windows®. Some of the tools inlcuded are "free for personal use" copies so users need to respect these licenses. A few of the tools included in UBCD4Win are paid for and licensed software owned by UBCD4win. On occasion UBCD4win works with software companies/authors for permission to include their software in the download or have requested their software better support PE.

UBCD4Win is based on Bart's PE©. Bart's PE© builds a Windows® "pre-install" environment CD, basically a simple Windows® XP booted from CD. UBCD4Win includes network support and allows you the ability to modify NTFS volumes, recover deleted files, create new NTFS volumes, scan hard drives for viruses, etc. The download includes almost everything you need to repair system problems. This project has been put together to be the ultimate recovery cd and not a replacement OS (Operating System).
