Bootable kits is a term used by technicians that reference a bunch of tools on a bootable DVD/CD that can be used to in repairing data and operating systems. There are many bootable kits and only a few that are customizable and free. These are just a few of them that we would call necessary to have in a tech bag.
NOTE: This list only contains bootable DVD/CD that you can customize onto a flash disk or backup hard drive and allows you to add additional tools to enhance the abilities.
If you have any feedback that you would like to share, regarding any data recovery company, please feel free to email me at Articles@McClainSolutions.com
Trinity Rescue Kit or TRK is a free live Linux distribution that aims specifically at recovery and repair operations on Windows machines, but is equally usable for Linux recovery issues. Bart's PE Builder helps you build a "BartPE" (Bart Preinstalled Environment) bootable Windows CD-Rom or DVD from the original Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 installation/setup CD, very suitable for PC maintenance tasks.
It will give you a complete Win32 environment with network support, a graphical user interface (800x600) and FAT/NTFS/CDFS filesystem support. Very handy for burn-in testing systems with no OS, rescuing files to a network share, virus scan and so on.
Knopper is a German made bootable Linux tool kit that comes with a 64bit kernel in addition to the usual one with 32 bits. Knopper is also classified as a full media bootable operating system because the majority of the technical community is using this as their main operating system opposed to using Microsoft or Mac operating systems. This makes this bootable kit faster than other kits. If you like to use the new kernel you must enter knoppix64 instead of knoppix at the boot prompt. Some kernel modules are not available if you use the 64 bits kernel.
The support information is in German but it is also has an English version that you can enter by just adding English on the boot prompt. I personally have to use a translator program when using and configuring this kit, but it is a great way of making everything secure.
